Yoga is a systematic approach to life that brings harmony to body, mind and spirit. Yoga was first practised 7000 years ago, but is just as relevant and effective today, in dealing with the stresses of modern life.

The wide variety of styles can be confusing to someone new to yoga. The postures (asanas) practiced in a yoga class are essentially similar, but the way that the postures are sequenced (vinyasa), the instructions given, or the environment in which they are practiced, can vary tremendously. It really just comes down to personal preference. What do you want from a yoga class?

Many classes available today concentrate on yoga as a form of exercise. This is understandable when we look at the many physical benefits, including improved flexibility, better posture, increased bone density and regulation of hormonal secretion. However, yoga has much more to offer.

The traditional purpose of practising yoga is to have a positive impact on the mind. To relax the mind; to let go of all those busy thoughts and come to a place of stillness. Yoga philosophy offers an incredible insight into the workings of the mind and meditation is the practical application of this philosophy, enabling us to develop a deeper sense of fulfilment and connection in our lives.

In my classes, the asanas (postures) and awareness of breath are practiced to allow the mind to relax and refocus. The physical emphasis is on increasing flexibility and correct alignment, so that the body remains open and in a state of balance. It is useful to think in terms of energy flowing around the body; if we hold the postures too rigidly, we will stop this flow. If we push the body too hard, we will have an aerobic workout, which will inhibit the more subtle effects of the postures (eg hormonal regulation). In this sense, asanas are 'innercises' rather than exercises.

To gain these benefits, a daily practice is best. Even if it is 10 minutes each morning, these minutes can make a huge impact on the rest of your day. Going to classes or workshops gives you the knowledge to change your life for the better. One-to-one tuition can give you a personal and realistic practice to use at home.
